CHAPTER FIFTEEN
We were finally at the stage of the hotel construction project where we were confident enough to plan the grand re-opening. I was always in favor of going to the experts for help for things I donât know. Today, Mom, Max, Stan, Caroline, and I were all in the back room at Carolineâs Confections. Caroline had set out samples of all the treats we might order for the event. Four tables were covered with every kind of sweet you could imagine, many I had never seen in her display cases.
âCaroline, you have really outdone yourself. This looks incredible,â I said as I toured the tables. âHow will we be able to narrow it down?â I laughed. We all circled the desserts several times and then gathered at a table to commence the planning.
Stan sat between Mom and me. He reached out a hand to each of us and looked back and forth. His voice cracked. âChloe and Mabel, how can I ever pay you back with my gratitude? I owe you for so many things,â he said.
I smiled. âIâm just glad we found you to help us plan this shindig. We want to do it up right,â I said. Stanâs party-planning business had begun to recover. The contract for the bingo games had even been restored.
He released our hands and opened the notebook in front of him. âWell, then youâve come to the right place. Caroline and I will knock it out of the park. This town owes you for solving Bartâs murder and finding the missing museum piece, even if it was damaged,â he said.
âThat Bart was a scoundrel,â Mom interjected.
Max jumped up and started barking. He sauntered over to Caroline and placed his head on her thigh, opening his eyes wide. The two of them had become thick as thieves.
Caroline looked at me for permission. âHe can have whatever he wants,â I said. âIf he hadnât been nosing around those bushes and got that candy stuck to the bottom of his paw, we might still be trying to figure out what happened.â
Caroline knew Max well and always treated him right. She had a plate of his favorite gingersnaps in the middle of the table. She retrieved one, showed it to him, and tossed it up. He caught it mid-air, like the well-tuned athlete he was. He sat and stared at her, encouraging her to keep them coming. âOK, boy. Letâs pace ourselves. Weâve got a lot to cover in our meeting,â Caroline said and turned back to our planning committee. Max laid down beside her, still fixated on her hand the moment it had another treat inside of it.
âIâm still shocked that Donna did it.â Mom joined the conversation. âI mean, sheâs a little old lady,â she said. Mom didnât think of herself as a little old lady. That was partially why she was still able to help run the hotel at age eighty.
âI donât think she planned it. Since she used that candlestick to bonk him on the head, Iâm guessing it just happened in the heat of the moment.
